Northwoods Lodging on US 31 has nearly completed an exterior upgrade. The log front façade is done and the ends of the building are scheduled to be finished this spring said owners Jim and Connie McLaren. It is looking good!
Crystal Lake Floral gifts & Garden opened on 2/29/08 on the south end of Papano’s Pizza on US 31. Owners Terri and Bob Schmidt, who are not new to the flower business, also own Pleasanton Valley Greenhouse in Bear Lake. The Yarn Market has moved into 244 Benzie Blvd. just 2 doors down. Owner Michelle Heckman is getting organized and has remained open for business. 882-4640
Also moving further down the street is the Beading Frenzy, 882-9838. Owner Lorie Woods hopes to have the move finished by May 1 as she takes over the front of the Tag Shop. The Tag Sale Shop will return to the back of the building, per owner Peggy Timms, 882-1110.
Crystal Lake Adventure Sports is operating out of its Frankfort building 7 days a week at 352-4574. The Beulah site is for sale as well as the adjacent two buildings to the north. Crystal Lake Adventure Sports in Beulah is planning to reopen for Memorial Day Weekend.
BioTech has moved from Beulah further north on US 31, beyond the Best Western on the opposite side of the road.
The retail space vacated by the Yarn Shop and the Beading Frenzy will be home for the Benzie County Democrats later this summer through the November elections.
Five Corners opened its clock/ watch/ repair shop, bait shop/ outfitters and is ready for ice cream out the Cantina window this Memorial Day.

Swimmer’s Itch
We received several remedies for the ‘itch’ as well as additional information. Please don’t feed the birds! The following were received from our readers:
- Before swimming, apply baby oil: Madonna Cussans
- Apply nail polish (any color will do!) on the bites: Nicole Olney
- Apply Ancient Healer salve (Creation Farms/River Rd.) on the bites: Phil Downs
- Leave the water from the ends of docks, try to avoid the shores and towel off ASAP: Natalie Renn
- Look out for signs/warnings at the beaches, however, once 'bit', try antihistamines and cortisone based creams on the bites: Charley Kinzel
- Call and report incidents of 'itch' to the Hotline: 231-352-5328 (leave a message)
Cold Creek Sludge Removal
A contract will be awarded this spring to have the Cold Creek settling pond’s sludge removed to keep the flow into the lake clean. Last summer, many truckloads of the old dried sludge was transported out to make room for this removal project. Costs are shared between Benzonia and Beulah.

Rain Garden Project for the Trailhead Building
A Rain Garden to be built by Benzie County elementary students will begin in late June. Sponsored by the Crystal Lake and Watershed Association and funded by the Friends of the Betsie Valley Trail and the John Barnes Foundation, the 6’ by 30’ garden will be on the north side of the trail along the retaining wall and will be filled with native, deep root, water cleansing plants. The Lakeshore and Periwinkle Garden Clubs and Plant it Wild members will be assisting the students.
